10 Essential Parenting Principles

Preparing for our first parenting Seminar of the school year, I asked myself, what are the essential parenting principles that parents need?  What fresh perspectives can I offer?  What parenting skills and concepts will profit our families?  I reflected on my own experiences over the years as a parent, a teacher and as a school director.  I went through my parenting seminar notes, power points presentations, parenting books, notes from counseling parents. How I would have benefited from this information as a young mom!

Then I thought, can I narrow down the skills needed for effective parenting to a Top 10 List?  Below is my attempt to do so, although not in any particular order of importance.

1)      The importance of authority.

2)      Train your child proactively instead of reactively.

3)      Understand the 7 essential qualities that every person needs to be successful.

4)      Teach excellence instead of mediocrity

5)      Nurture purpose and calling in your child’s life.

6)      Deal with heart problems directly by shepherding the Spirit.

7)      Practice the power of Speaking Life.

8)      Deal with the will of a child by setting boundaries.

9)      Teach your child to practice principles for Success.

10)   Use the Bible as the standard.

Many of these principles are not taught in schools, teacher training courses, nor even used by my own parents.  They were gleaned from respected authorities in parenting, tested in my own home, employed by our Teachers here at Legacy, and, hopefully, received into our school’s families.  They are to provide focus, guidance and peace to parents; stability, security and boundaries to their children. Our daily parenting decisions will be a lot easier once we have clear guidelines.

You are invited to our Parenting Seminar on Oct. 24th.  Our school sponsors these free seminars because we believe in more than just educating children.  We equip parents to fulfill this great calling in their lives.  Each Principle warrants its own seminar to do it justice.  I will give an overview on the 10 Essential Principles, focusing on one or two of them for the evening.  We will discuss how these can be applied in the home and at school.   Free childcare is also provided so both parents can attend.  Please RSVP to Ms. Carol at or call Legacy at 858-679-9949.

Like the rudder of a ship, the Kindergarten years determine the direction of your child’s education.   The required skills, such as work habits, attitude towards learning, level of confidence, social and leadership skills, etc, take root between the ages of 5 and 6.

What can Parents and educators of five- and six-year-olds do to ensure that these years of school are utilized most effectively?  We need to understand the developmental stages and make full use of the child’s learning potential.

Legacy is offering an opportunity for parents to come together to learn and discuss options, and to and hear from educators and parents who have been through these stages.  This can be one of most important meetings you attend for your child.

I hope to see you here at the school from 6pm- 8pm.  Childcare and a light dinner are provided free of charge.

10 Ways to Spoil Your Child Without Making Them Rotten

Finding you and your children stressed out by discipline issues?  Wish you could remain firm in raising them right while making sure they don’t get overwhelmed?  Do you find yourself regretting how you’ve treated your child, even though you were right?

Here are 10 ways to spoil your child without making them rotten:

1) Lavish them with life defining words: (E.G. You are a generous child, you are intelligent, diligent, you are an honest person) Even though you might feel they don’t have these qualities yet, speak it into existence.   They will rise to the expectation as you define them by their nature, not their behavior.

2) Take them out on a date to the place of their choice:  E.G. Mother-Daughter date for ice cream, Father-Son date to the airplane museum.

3) Rub their backs gently while talking with them

4) Brag about them in front of others:  E.G.  “My son brought breakfast to me, he has such a servant heart .  My daughter has such a compassionate spirit that she prays for _____”

5) Cook something he requests that he doesn’t normally get.

6) Say yes to things to which you normally say no:  E.G “Sure you can have one small piece of that chocolate cake after we finish dinner, after that we can even go ride bikes together to work off the sugar.”

7) When they need to pick up their clothes in their room, try saying, “I am going to help you clean your room and even label the drawers so you’ll know where to put your clothes next time.”

8 ) Play a game of your chid’s choice

9) Take them buy the toy they have been saving for.

10) After your child does something worthy of a serious consequence, explain the reason why what they did was wrong but end with and affirming statement:  E.G. ” I love you and will always forgive you.”

As a reminder:  On Thursday, March 1st,, 2012 at 6PM we will resume our Free Parenting Seminars.  Click HERE for more information.
